Angels Among Us - Crochet Students at Russellville’s Rambler Center Provide Support to Hospice of Hope – Ohio Valley

Every Friday, rain or shine, Mary Kelch of Bethel donates her time to teach others the art of crocheting and knitting.  Each week she instructs or mentors a class of 15-30 students, from all age groups, that share similar passions for crocheting or knitting.  This technique building time is made possible by the Rambler Center in Russellville who provides the location for the students. Most of the yarn used for the course has been donated as well as the patterns and other tools of the trade.  There is no fee for this class, however contributions are always welcome.  Students can bring in their own projects or come to the class to get ideas from others.

“My donated time is well spent when others share the same passion as I do when learning to crochet or knit. I really enjoy the opportunity that we have to help the community”, said Kelch.

The class has three community wide objectives that include 1) prepping and planning for their annual craft show in early November at the Rambler Center where they teach others the skill of basket weaving, 2) making “Lap Robes” for the many patients at Ohio Valley Manor, which provides warmth from both the their heart and of course the material and 3) crocheted angels that are donated to Hospice of Hope-Ohio Valley which are given out as Christmas Ornaments to their Nursing Home patients.

Blanch Ingram, a student of the course from Georgetown, states, “I first started this class to enhance my skills and a for a little fun. I never knew that what we do as a group would turn into an opportunity to help so many others”.

Michael Parker, Director of Public Relations & Development for Hospice of Hope stated, “Without groups and supporters such as this, our organization could not be as strong as it is today.  We truly have “angels” looking over us throughout areas we serve”.
